Most of my ST gripes are the same as the article that started this
thread, but...
I agree launching a program from the desktop is slow, but since
Ive ordered and am waiting for TOS 2.06, I hope this will remedy
that problem. I currently have NeoDesk 3.2 and love it, but am
wondering if Ill need it for 2.06? Ill find out...
I dont mind not having a buss, considering all the ports that
are available. One this I miss is the absense of an accepted
industry standard hard drive interface (ST-506 at least, or true
SCSI).
I dont like the processor speed. I think Atari is still the only
company these days that has a current product with an 8MHz 68k.
And memory expansion isnt that bad. Ive an STe with 4mb (not a
Mega STe, tho. 4180STe? In keeping with the model numbers?)
but I want more, more, more RAM!
I like the OS in ROM. Its not a hassle to boot of a disk. Since
at this point I dont have a hard drive, thats fine with me. Also,
I disagree with the original posters comment about upgradeability.
TOS 2.06 only cost me $63, which is less than say MS-DOS 5, or
DR-DOS 6. And upgrading is easy (at least for me, since I am a
qualified electronics technicion and bad speller, I dont mind
ripping my machine apart)
If TOS 2.06 will fit right in my late 1991 STe, I anticipate
a 15 minute procedure. Try to upgrade MS-DOS in that time. Hell,
loading MS-Windows takes a hell of a lot longer than that to load.
Considering that a GUI is part of the Atari OS, thats not bad...
I hate my non-Mega keyboard. The layout is perfect, the feel sux.
I see a product called Z-Keys that will allow you to attach a
PC clone stanard keyboard, which will allow concurrent use of the
ST and PC keyboard. Maybe... Anyone have this?
Screen resolution is no big deal to me. Monochrome is close enough
to standard VGA, which is fine with me. I wouldnt mind having
1280x1024, or 24 bit colour, but those upgrades would undoubtable
cost over $1000
Now, let me justifiy myself a little. All these do not add up to a
flame against Atari. I work on very large VAX machines, Macs, IBM
mainframes, PCs, etc... Ive no loyalty to one or the other. I like
my Atari cause it does most of what I need...
And if I could afford it, I would love a TT. I also am wondering
about the ST Book. Anyone have one, or have any stats on it? Like
memory, disk storage, price?

Dream on, you don't know what you're talking about. If AmigaDOS (
actually exec.library) had memory protection and virtual memory, it
would virtually be unix. Exec, like Mach, is not Unix, they are merely
microkernels with other OSs put on top, (in the Amiga's case,
dos and intuition, in the NeXT's case, BSD and NeXTStep).
If they are not in the same league, how come I can compile most
Unix source's without changing anything? How a number of Exec and
Dos functions have the same name as Unix counter parts?
Exec is even object oriented!
>AMIGA DOS is incredibly primitive compared to Mach. Let me See the AMIGA
Well it lacks memory protection and virtual memory, but besides that,
Mach doesn't have that much on it. Exec has the fastest context switch time
of any multitasking OS, and its the reason why we don't have virtual
memory or memory protection. The entire Amiga OS relies on shared
memory the tasks can write to each other's local memory. For instance,
when you send a message, it doesn't copy it, it just changes a single
longword pointer to point to the message.
>3000-25 run the same OS on its architecture, as the Next 030, and I bet
>you wouldn't be such a proud owner of your 3000.
Get a clue. The 3000 has a very fast memory and bus design. The Zorro III
bus can reach speeds of over 40mb/s at 25mhz, and the 3000 uses
burst/nibble SCRAM ZIPs, 32bit access to memory, and a custom chip, RAMsey,
to manage RAM access so it knows when to use the SCRAM features.
The NeXT is slow because Display Postscript is slow. I should know because
I have an AMI 486/33, Tseng ET4000, running ESIX SVr4 with
Motif, OpenLook, OpenWindows, and NeWS (Display Postscript). When I run
NeWS it takes about 5 seconds to move a window, about 8 to resize it,
and the whole time the mouse pointer jumps around the screen because
the server is running in 100% interpreted postscript. If it's slow on
a 486/33 w/16mb memory, 256k cache, imagine how slow it is on a 256 byte
cache, 68030/25 with 8mb of memory.
What this has to do with the pathetic ST I don't know.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but I asked about getting KanjiTalk to
work on an Atari ST with Spectre a few months ago, and got a couple of
replies, but I didn't have time to follow up on it. Well, I am trying
again, and have found that it crashes when trying to run the KanjiTalk init
(the one that has an icon with a mountain). If I remove that from the
system folder, it boots up fine, but won't show any kanji. I am using
KanjiTalk 6.0.7. Anyone have any ideas on getting it to work?
Thanks,

Two days ago (on 25 Jan) I ordered a modem from a company
called "B.F.J." (1-800-932-4712) who are selling the SupraFaxMOdem
v.32bis for US$279, including shipping (presumably only to the
US/Canada, but you might ask). When I called they had a back order
of around 60 modems, but you might be able to queeze in on the first
shipment from Supra if you call soon.
If you're not interested in the "bis" option (hint: you ARE
:-), Computability is selling the FaxMOdem v.32 (no bis) for $239,
and their number is 1-800-558-0003. They are selling the v.32bis
modem for $309.

There are actually three versions of the software that
they're shipping - Mac, PC, and Windows. All three of these are
commercial, "off-the-shelf" packages tat Supra has merely licensed
for use with their modems. I don't think that they would go through
that kind of trouble given the small size of the ST market (there is
at least one commercial fax package for the Amiga - but maybe Supra
didn't want to bother, agai because of a miniscule market).
>seems kinda strange that Supra isn't releasing ST FAX sw to

Aha! I sense an opportunity for a smart shareware author to
make some money! (heh! - evil grin!) If/when I receive my Supra
modem, I might try to whip up something - but you might also try
talking to the CodeHeads, who were considering importing a French
send/receive fax software package - with the plethora of v.32/fax
modems (thanks to the new Rockwell chipset), maybe there will be a
market for such software for the ST!

I had no trouble on a 520, TOS 1.0, double-sided floppy. Had to de-install

Has anyone had any problems booting up their system when STalker 3
is installed? I installed STalker on my hard drive and when I tried
to boot up with, my machine would lock up. It locks up when loading
the NEODESK.EXE program.
On the rare occasion that I am able to get my machine to come up,
I select STalker from the DA panel and nothing happens. The mouse
moves around but STalker doesn't show and I can't do anything on
the desk top. Does anyone or has anyone had this problem? If
so, could you let me know how you rectified the problem. BTW,
below are the programs in my auto folder and the DAs I have on boot

Subject: Supra 20-Meg HD for sale!
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have a Super 20-Meg HD for sale.
A new host adaptor was recently placed in it.
The system comes with the original box, cables, manuals, and software.
There is one slight problem with the mechinisim. It sometimes "sticks"
and the switcher inside of it needs to be moved in order to work.
I have been told by more than one person that this is a common problem
among Supras and that it can be easily fixed by a good cleaning.
If you have had this problem before and know how to fix it, you might
want to take a chance on this one.
OR
You can just keep using the drive even though it sticks sometimes.
When left on, there is no problem.
OR
You can just replace it. Mechinisms are cheap.
I'm interested in selling the host adaptor, casing, and everyting else.
The price: $220.00
I may go a little lower.
I originally had a buyer for this amount but it fell through.
Len
Please respond by e-mail.
P.S. for your information, the host adaptor cost me around $150.00.
The hard drive itself cost me $250.00 a year ago.

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have successfully set up CS-TEX to allow me to run a basic TeX and
LaTeX setup on a 1 Meg 1040 STE, with 2 floppy drives (one can be
used if your prepared to swop disks alot), which allows me to
edit, process, view and print documents. I takes just 4 disks.
One for the TeX bins, one for the fonts and inputs, plus one each
for the viewer and printer driver.
(If your wishing to set up a similar system, mail me and I'll
tell you what you'll need, if there's enough interest, I'll put
together an article explaining things)
My problem lies in the 24-pin printer driver. I have a b/w Star LC24-200
and I use the Epson option in the driver, as suggested in the Star manual.
Occasionally (randomly) in the output, lines get skewed. Does anyone else
have this annoying problem? Is it due to the Epson emulation? Can I get a
true Star driver, or is the problem simply due to the resolution of the
output? (I highly doubt this, but thought I'd mention it.)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject: unnkullian adventure questions
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Hi,
I've started playing unnkullian adventure on my ST last weekend.
Getting started was pretty simple, but now it seems that I'm stuck.
I have 67 points (out of 400).
I think I've been on all places before the guardian, and on most places
I could do something. I also obtained a lot of stuff.
On the next screen are some questions. They may contain spoilers, so if
you are not that far in the game you may probably not want to read
further!
Main problem is how to pass the guardian. Probably I do not have all the
stuff (or it needs a trick I haven't mastered). I think I've been to all
places and retrieved everything.
I've also some smaller potential problems:
- I cannot operate the machine yet. I suspect I do not have the needed
resources.
- I've done nothing at the lake view room
- I could not descend the cliff by going west. A fatal fall is the result
- I haven't done anything with the patrons in the cliff.
- I cannot pass beyond the inn. I suppose this is impossible.
- I cannot post the card. If I drop it in the birds nest nothing
happens. And I want to try to catch that bird :-)
- I could not retrieve the rasberries.
I don't think there are other potential puzzles before the guardian
which I haven't mastered. If anyone has a hint, please let me know.
I do not have a need for spoilers yet.
Thanks,

I'm sure you have everything you need to get past the guardian,
although you'll need to find an item to replace the one you'll use
getting past it. Pay close attention to what motivates the guardian,
and check your inventory to see if you've got anything that might help
out (you do).
Once you get past the guardian, more things will be clear.
